Cloudy
Spa Water
Q:
Got a new spa, along with a Start-Up Kit. Followed all instructions,
pH was a bit high for a couple of days, but got that under control
(bromide tub with ozonator and 24-hour small pump). Tests were good,
water was crystal clear. I was happy! Then the spa vendor paid a visit
for "fireup" to show me all the workings, answer questions,
etc. He said that I should run the Spa for about 1 hr/day just to
circulate water/chemicals. Well, I did that and now my water is very
cloudy. Testing is still good. I did put some "spa-clear"
in but made no difference.
What is wrong? What did I do wrong? I did clean the filter (had some
dirt, not a great deal).
I assume that what's wrong is that I started running the pump where
during the week only ran it a couple of times when I was using it.
Can you help?
A:
One hour per day is not enough time to be running your filter. The
ozonator only works whenever the pump is running on low.
Try running the filter for 4-6 hours per day. If possible, break this
into 4 periods, with one period being 1-1 1/2 hours before your most
likely period of use. This will spread the sanitizing effect of ozone
over the day. Use the Start Up Chemical Kit to maintain a small residual
of bromine as backup. This is important because ozone has no long
lasting residual sanitizing effect after the pump is shut off.
